Changes on Cliffe Parish Council

I attended the Annual Meeting of Cliffe Parish Council yesterday evening and am I sad to report that after over ten years in the role Parish Chairman, Cllr. Gerry Carroll, has decided to retire both from his role as Parish Council chair and from the council itself.

The Parish council has decided to appoint Cllr. Mark Topham to the chair in Cllr. Carroll’s place.

Also retiring from the Parish Council is another long serving parish councillor and former Conservative Selby District Councillor for the old Hemingbrough Ward, David McSherry.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish both Gerry Carroll and David McSherry well in their retirement and also wish Cllr. Mark Topham well in his new role as Parish Chair.

North Yorkshire County Council Elections

I am both delighted and humbled to report that in the County Council Elections held in North Yorkshire that I re-gained the Division of Selby Barlby that I represented between 2009 and 2013 from Labour.

However, my running mate in this two member Division, Colin Heath, narrowly missed out on taking the second seat losing to Labours Stephanie Duckett.

The result was as follows:

Karl Arthur  –                  Conservative               1596

Steph Duckett    –            Labour                        1577

Steve Shaw-Wright  –     Labour                        1558

Colin Heath  –                  Conservative             1489

Paul Welbourne   –         Liberal Democrat       355

The result represents a swing from Labour to Conservative of about 8.5% from the previous time this seat was contested in 2013 and I re-gained the seat from Steve Shaw Wright who defeated me in 2013.

In the County as a whole we gained 10 seats on the Council and both UKIP and the Liberal Party lost all of their councillors on the authority in the process.  The Council makeup now consists:

55 Conservative

8 North Yorkshire Independents

4 Labour

3 Liberal Democrats

2 Independents (non-aligned)

I consider it a privilege to have been given the chance to represent this Division at County Hall, again, over the coming four years and will do so to the best of my ability.

In-Touch Leaflet

Colin Heath and I were delighted by the response we received to our recent In-Touch Survey.  We have responded to the issues raised and are now in a position to issue a follow up leaflet outlining the actions we have taken to the issues at we received through the survey.

We are hoping to deliver this leaflet in the next couple weeks but in the meantime would be delighted to respond to any other queries you may have.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you require any help.

Some Useful Phone Numbers

In our quest to win election to North Yorkshire County Council my fellow Conservative candidate for the Selby Barlby Division, Colin Heath, and I have developed a sorry we missed you card to deliver to people who are out when we call to canvass opinion.

On the back of the card we have put some useful phone contact numbers of various agencies in and around Selby District (and some National) who you may wish to contact at some point.  I shall set these numbers out below together with the contact details for some of the Parish Councils in my district council ward.  Please be aware that although every effort has been taken to ensure accuracy, I cannot accept liability for any errors as these are the numbers that I have been advised to use by the agencies concerned.

Free Parking in Selby

In an attempt to support growth and bring shoppers into the area in the run up to Christmas, Selby District Council has announced that there will be free parking in all car parks run by the district council in the two Saturdays preceding Christmas.

This will mean that you will be able to park free in any car park run by the district council at any time on Saturday 17th December and Saturday 24th December (Christmas Eve).

I hope that as many people as possible take advantage of this offer of free parking on both of these days and come and do their shopping in Selby Town or district on those particular days this helping local business in the run up to Christmas.

Winter Wonderland at Hagg Lane Green – Hemingbrough

The Hagg Lane Green Conservation Group have advised me that their annual Winter Wonderland event will be taking place on Saturday 10th December 2016 between 4pm and 6pm.

Although the event will be aimed primarily at children (Santa Claus will be in attendance in his grotto) “grown ups” are invited to join the group for a traditional Christmas treats like home made traditional sweet mince pies and mulled wine.

As well as inviting Santa Claus, the group have also organised some Christmas Theme activities to entertain both children and adults.

I attended last year with my colleagues for the area – Jim Deans (District Councillor) and Mike Jordan (County Councillor) – and enjoyed the occasion (winning several raffle prizes in the process).  Please do go along and support this event and the group.  I’m sure all members of your family will enjoy the occasion.
